DEUTERONOMY 10:12-22
Dietrich Bonhoeffer was a German Lutheran clergyman, theologian, anti-Nazi rebel, and prominent Confessing Church founder. Every day he remained in Hitler’s Germany, his life was in danger, yet he persisted. He probably held the same belief as the apostle Paul, that although being in heaven was his ultimate goal, God’s current plan was for him to remain on earth where he was needed. So he remained; in his capacity as a pastor, he led covert worship services and opposed Hitler’s terrible rule.
Even under extreme stress or pressure, Bonhoeffer believed that every meal, every task, and every conversation were opportunities to share Christ with others.
We learn from Deuteronomy that God commanded the Israelites to imitate Him by treating strangers and widows with love and hospitality, just as He had done for them as they were leaving Egypt (10:18-19; Exodus 22:21-22). Because God loves us, He has given us the ability to love others in numerous ways every day through loving words and deeds.
Who among us appears lost or lonely on our daily journey? As we live and work together for Him, we may rely on the Lord to give us the ability to bring them compassion and hope.
Our capacity for love increases as we gain a better understanding of God’s love for us.
