PSALM 121
Life is not a straight path from one blessing to the next, with the target of achieving heaven at the end. Life is a tumultuous and twisted journey. God is not just going to simply mop up the mess after it has been made. For our benefit and the glory of Jesus Christ, He is charting the route and directing events.
The certainty that the Lord was charting their course and controlling the narrow and dangerous roads for the Jews traveling to Jerusalem for the annual feasts (Deuteronomy 16:16) was comforting. Psalm 121, a pilgrim song, expresses their assurance. Unlike a slumbering guard or the god Baal, who needed to be roused from his sleep (1 Kings 18:27), the Lord was always attentive and watched over His people’s journey with providential care. The Lord, who had rescued Israel, would continue to aid, protect, and accompany His people.
Life is a curving road full of unforeseen risks and difficulties, but we can be certain of the Lord’s guidance, protection, and support.
Troubles could be unknown, but God’s care is certain.
