PROVERBS 11:14
On a website, James Surowiecki’s “The Wisdom of Crowds” is described as follows: “In this book, James Surowiecki explores a deceptively simple idea: Large groups of people are smarter than an elite few, no matter how brilliant.” According to the book’s synopsis on the website, they are also, “Better at solving problems, fostering innovation, coming to wise decisions, even predicting the future.”
The author attempted to convey the following idea: The crowd, more often than not, gets it right. It is an intriguing theory, but one that will almost certainly be disputed during election seasons or when someone’s favourite candidate is voted off a reality show.
While the Bible makes it plain that crowd wisdom can be unreliable and perhaps hazardous (Matthew 7:13-14), there is another way in which collective wisdom can be beneficial. People stumble when there is no counsel, according to Proverbs 11:14, but there is safety when there are many advisers. One of the advantages of being a part of the body of Christ is that we may help one another through cooperating in seeking God’s wisdom. We find safety in God’s provision of one another and get His knowledge to tackle life’s obstacles when we work together.
When we pursue God’s wisdom together, we have a better chance of succeeding.
🙏🏼”Immortal, invisible, God only wise,
in light inaccessible hid from our eyes,
most blessed, most glorious, the Ancient of Days,
almighty, victorious, thy great Name we praise.”
(Hymns A&M 372)
