IGNORANCE IS NOT AN EXCUSE

ROMANS 5:12-21

The legal principle that “ignorance of the law is no excuse” literally means people cannot defend their actions by claiming that they do not know the law, even if they honestly have not realised that they are breaking the law.

If the claim of ignorance of the law is accepted, then the law will become powerless as anyone and everyone will only need to claim ignorance to get off the hook.

From a medical standpoint, some people avoid going to the doctor because they do not want to find out that something is wrong with them. On the spiritual side, some avoid going to church for the same reason. But ignorance of our illness does not make us healthy, and ignorance of our sin does not make us innocent.

In his letter to Christians living in Rome, Paul addressed the problem of ignorance or misunderstanding. When people were ignorant of God’s righteousness, they invented their own (Romans 10:3). When we live by our standards of right and wrong, we may feel good, but that does not make us spiritually healthy. It is only when we are measured by the standards of God (Jesus) that we know the state of our spiritual health.

Knowing and obeying God’s Word makes us healthy. Intentional or unintentional ignorance is not an excuse.

🙏Lord Jesus, our Great Physician, You know our hearts and all our physical and spiritual challenges. Make us clean; make us well.
