DO WE STILL HAVE ARMOUR-BEARERS?

1 SAMUEL 14:1-14

Historically, an armour-bearer is a person who carries the armour or weapons of a soldier or warrior. Traditionally, it is the person in the church who helps the minister with everything – from praying to picking up visitors at the airport to running interference for the minister, etc.

The people of Israel and the Philistines were at war. As King Saul relaxed with his men, Jonathan and his armour-bearer quietly left the camp to see if the Lord would work on their behalf, believing that nothing could stop the Lord from saving by many or by few (1 Samuel 14:6).

Jonathan and his assistant were about to cross a path between two high cliffs; armed enemy soldiers were stationed above them on both sides. They were two men against who knows how many. When Jonathan suggested they climb up after them, the armour-bearer never flinched (1 Samuel 14:7), so the two climbed the cliff and, with God’s help, defeated the enemy.

The church needs strong leaders to face our spiritual foes, but they should not be left alone to face them. They need the help and support of everyone in the congregation – loyal “armour-bearers” who are willing to join them in battle against the enemy.

Leaders are at their best when people get behind them.

🙏Lord raise up armour-bearers who are willing to give their all, in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
