OUT OF BOUNDS MARKERS

JEREMIAH 5:21-31

In golfing, “out of bounds” are those areas outside the golf course from which play is not allowed. Out of bounds are usually marked, often by the use of stakes or some barrier (a fence, for example). If a player’s ball goes out of bounds, a one-stroke penalty is imposed.

Prophet Jeremiah warned the people about their persistent rejection of God’s boundaries for them. He said that even the sea knows that the sand on the seashore is its out of bounds marker (Jeremiah 5:22). Yet, the people had obstinate and rebellious hearts (Jeremiah 5:23). There was no fear of God.

God has given moral boundaries in His Word for us to live within. By observing them we enjoy His blessings. God told Israel through Moses, “I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live” (Deuteronomy 30:19).

As individuals, families, communities, nations, we should not test God’s boundaries and invite His correction. Let us make wise choices to live within His out of bounds markers in His Word.

A small step of obedience is a giant step to blessing.

* Lord, our own designs are sure to fail. Help us to keep Your Word in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
