THE WICKED AND THE FAITHFUL

PROVERBS 13:17

The word ‘wicked’ is believed to have entered into the English language around the 13th century, perhaps as an alteration of the Middle English wicke or the Old English wicca which means witch or wizard. In Christian usage, it meant a mental disregard for justice, righteousness, truth, honour, virtue; evil in thought and life; depravity; sinfulness; criminality.

These are obviously words we do not want to describe us.

Faithfulness is essential for trust building, for without trust there is no confidence and little can be achieved.

Faithfulness and integrity are great character traits. When others trust us or find us dependable, it is our duty and privilege to fulfill their desires and needs as perfectly as possible. This is noble performance that brings God’s approval and blessing and that of men as well.

Faithfulness and integrity are shown in our text by a messenger or ambassador. Wicked men get in trouble – they are easily waylaid by foolish distractions or pressure to compromise – they are not trustworthy or reliable. A faithful man brings prosperity to those trusting him, for he finishes the job as desired and expected. How often do we get waylaid?

It is a foolish sin to betray the confidence and trust of those who give us assignments. The prosperous functioning of any society depends on men discharging their duties with diligence and honesty. Wicked men get diverted and fail their commitments. But faithful men make sure they complete the job, and they are a precious benefit to all concerned.

As God’s ambassadors, we must remain above reproach. Where we make mistakes, we are to be swift to acknowledge them to all who have suffered as a consequence.

Faithfulness is an act of the will and a way of life; it constructs the paving stones for God’s way.

Are we faithful? What can we do to build trust both within and outside the church?

*Lord Jesus, wherever I struggle with my Christian testimony, help me to be faithful. Amen.
