DESTROYING FOR PROGRESS

JOHN 2:19

After a demolition company pulled down the wrong building, investigators discovered that the owner of a house scheduled to be demolished nailed the numbers of his own address to a neighbour’s house to avoid demolition.

Jesus did the opposite. He was on a mission to let His own “house” be torn down for the sake of others.

The Jewish leaders, and probably some other persons, did not understand Jesus’ statement. They felt He was referring to the magnificent temple which Herod the Great initiated its refurbishing in 19BC. Though functional in Jesus’ day (see John 2:13–22), it was not completely finished until AD64, only to be destroyed again in AD70 by the Romans.

Like the people of His time, we may not understand what Jesus is doing or out to do, but He is always working out things for our good. He may even choose to destroy temples today to make sure His purposes are accomplished.

Lord, please help us to believe that You are always working in the background doing far more and much better than we know or understand.
