As his coworkers were promoted one by one, John felt disappointed and a bit envious. But he decided to leave his career to God. Several years later, he was finally promoted. By then, his added experience enabled him to do his job confidently and won him the respect of subordinates. Some of his colleagues who received early promotions were still struggling with their responsibilities, as they had been promoted before they were ready. He realized God had taken him through the long way so that he would be better prepared for his role.
After more than four hundred years of slavery in Egypt, the march to the Promised Land for the children of Israel began in Exodus 13.
When God led the Israelites out of Egypt, He chose a longer way. The longer journey gave them more time to strengthen themselves physically, mentally, and spiritually for subsequent battles.
The shortest way is not always the best. Sometimes God lets us take the longer route in life so that we will be better prepared for the journey ahead.
