OUR FATHER

MATTHEW 6:9

Every father has a unique way to show his love to his children. Some instill discipline, others tell it through jokes, many try to impart wisdom, etc.

Our fathers are a rich source of valuable lessons that can help us navigate through life – if we only listen and look past their imperfections.

On one occasion, the disciples heard Jesus praying, and the significance of that prayer so impressed them that their immediate response was a request that He should teach them how to pray.

So Jesus taught them. What followed was not a formula for us to pray, but a model to teach us how to pray. And it begins not with confession, not with a petition for our needs, not with thanksgiving, but with a recognition of and commitment to our relationship with God – our Father.

Like our earthly fathers, God demonstrates His fatherhood by defending us, disciplining us, and being devoted to us.

Some striking differences between God our Father in heaven and earthly fathers are –
(i) Our earthly fathers may fail us, but He is perfect, and He never fails (Isaiah 55:11)
(ii) When our earthly fathers are no more (dead), He remains with us forever (Matthew 28:20)
(iii) Our earthly fathers are limited. The most they can provide are all our earthly needs. He gives us salvation and life eternal (John 3:16).
