THE FOUNDATION

MATTHEW 7:24-27

There are several leaning towers around the world today, but the most famous is the Leaning Tower of Pisa in Italy. The construction of the Leaning Tower of Pisa began in August 1173 and was completed in the mid-1300s.

The Pisans attacked the city of Palermo on the island of Sicily in 1063. The attack was successful and the conquerors returned to Pisa with a lot of treasure. To show the world just how important the city was, the people of Pisa decided to build a great cathedral complex, the Field of Miracles. The plan included a cathedral, a baptistery, a bell tower (the Tower of Pisa) and a cemetery.

The Tower began to lean by the time its builders got to the third story, in 1178 because of soft ground. Shifting soil had destabilized it’s foundations. Over the next 800 years, it became clear the 55-metre tower was not just learning but was actually falling at a rate of one to two millimeters per year. What was the problem? The engineers did not dig a deep enough foundation. So today, engineers keep inspecting this historic tower, hoping it can stand for the next 200 years – if an earthquake does not reduce that calculation.

The painful lesson here is this – foundations matter. If our foundation is not solid, disaster can spring up anytime.

Jesus taught about two builders – one who built on the rock and another on sand. When the storm came, the house with a solid foundation stood and the other fell down.

Our lives must be built through obedience and trust in Christ and His word.

We are not promised storm free lives. But if He is our rock, the storms and floods will never wash us away
