The ability to forgive does not come naturally. When someone has wronged us, we want to retaliate, or hate the person for as long as possible.
God gives us a glimpse of how much He has forgiven us in Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross. To not offer the same gift to another would be like saying we are better than God, and we create prisons for ourselves and others.
COLOSSIANS 3:13.
