WHY DO YOU WORK?

EPHESIANS 6:5-9

Sir Christopher Wren PRS FRS was one of the most famous British architects in history. He is best known as the architect who redesigned St. Paul’s Cathedral in London, but his first loves were physics, astronomy and mathematics.

According to legend, one day he visited the construction site of the Cathedral of St. Paul and the workers did not recognise him. Wren scoured the site and asked several of the men what they were up to. A worker replied, “I am cutting a piece of stone.” A second worker replied, “I am earning five shillings and two pence a day.” A third, however, had a different view: “I am helping Christopher Wren build a beautiful cathedral to the glory of God.“ What a contrast in the attitude and motivation of this worker!

Why we do what we do is extremely important, both in our spiritual work and in secular careers/jobs. For this reason, Paul instructed the Ephesians not to do their work as eyeservice to please men, but as ministers of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart, serving as unto the Lord and not men ( Ephesians 6:6-7).

If we do our job just to earn a salary or please a boss, we will lack the supreme motivation to do our best as a demonstration of our devotion to God. So why do we work? As the worker told Wren, we work for “the glory of God.”

Always remember that no matter who signs your paycheque you are really working for God.

🙏🏼Almighty God, whose hands hold all matters of life, give us grace to succeed in the work that we do. Help us to work for Your glory.
