UZZIAH’S TRAGIC FLAW

2 CHRONICLES 26:3-16

In literature, a tragic flaw is a character trait that leads to a hero’s downfall. Uzziah, who was crowned king of Judah at the age of 16, was an example of this. He sought the Lord for several years, and during that time, God blessed him with enormous achievement. Things changed, however, as his popularity spread far and wide, and he became powerful. To his destruction, his heart was lifted up.

Uzziah defied God’s command and entered the Lord’s temple to burn incense on the altar. Perhaps pride had convinced him that God’s precepts did not apply to him. When Uzziah became enraged at the priests who warned him that what he was doing was wrong, the Lord smote him with leprosy (2 Chron. 26:18-20).

How frequently do we see a person of good reputation fall from honour into disgrace and misery in literature and in life? Until the day he died, King Uzziah was a leper. He lived in a dwelling that was cut off from the Lord’s house.

Only by following the Lord with a humble heart can we keep the nectar of praise from becoming the poison of pride.

Humility is a difficult trophy that is rarely won; we are only humble in God’s eyes when we serve as His Son did.

🙏🏼 Lord Jesus, make us as humble as Yourself.
