JEREMIAH 15:15-21
The Bible translation that carries King James’ name is well-known. He revised The Book of Common Prayer around the same time as the Bible was being printed. This intercession and worship guide, which is still in use today, contains a beautiful prayer by Thomas Cranmer that is helpful for internalizing the Bible: “Blessed Lord, who hast caused all holy Scriptures to be written for our learning; grant us that we may in such wise hear them, read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest them; that by patience and comfort of thy holy Word, we may embrace, and ever hold fast the blessed hope of everlasting life, which thou hast given us in our Saviour Jesus Christ.”
Jeremiah, the prophet, expressed a similar way of letting the Scriptures nurture our hearts in Jeremiah 15:16, many centuries ago. Through prayerful meditation, we absorb the Word as we read, mark, study, and inwardly digest a passage of Scripture.
May the Lord help us to put the Bible into practice in our lives today. Let us ponder on the meat and milk of God’s Word (Heb. 5:12). He will reveal Himself to us through His Book as we quiet our hearts.
And always remember – some books are meant to be tasted, while others are meant to be swallowed, and only a handful are meant to be chewed and digested.
🙏🏼 Open our eyes that we may see wondrous things from Your law in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
