PHILIPPIANS 3:1–11
Growing up, my parents raised us to be “good people” by obeying them, telling the truth, succeeding in school and work, and attending church, including Easter and Christmas. This definition is familiar to many people, regardless of culture.
Paul, a devout first-century Jew, was a true good person, born into the “right” family, educated, and practicing the “right” religion. He was a true example of good behaviour according to Jewish custom. However, he also acknowledged that being good was not the same as pleasing God.
Paul made it clear that pleasing God involves knowing Jesus (Philippians 3:7-8). We are good when our hope and faith are in Christ, not in our goodness.
🙏Dear God, as we seek to live good lives, help us remember that knowing Jesus is the way to ultimate goodness.
