THE STORM ON THE SEA OF GALILEE

MARK 4:35-41

At the age of 27, Rembrandt painted the seascape, Christ in the Storm on the Sea of Galilee. It shows Jesus calming the sea’s waves and preserving the lives of the fourteen men on board. Rembrandt included a self-portrait of himself on the boat, close to Jesus and his twelve followers to make them fourteen men.

The disciples’ striking lesson about who Jesus is and what He is capable of is described in Mark’s gospel. Jesus was sleeping as they were desperately trying to save a sinking boat. They were all about to pass away, but did He not care? Jesus questioned them about their fear after calming the storm. Was he anticipating that they would rejoice and celebrate despite the threat?

Like Rembrandt, we can imagine ourselves in this story and learn, as did Jesus’ disciples, that to everyone who trusts in Jesus Christ, He manifests His presence, mercy, and control in every adversity of life.

🙏🏼Lord, You are our safe dwelling place in life’s storms.
