GENESIS 6:8, 11-22
Four fingers and a thumb lived side by side on a hand, according to an African folktale. Friends for life, they were. On one occasion, they decided to steal a gold ring that was lying next to them. The four fingers referred to the thumb as an overrighteous coward and declined to be his friends because the thumb told them that stealing the ring would be wrong. The thumb accepted it with no problems because he had no interest in participating in their wickedness. The thumb is still said to stand apart from the other fingers because of this, according to the tale.
We may feel we are alone when wrongdoings are all around us. The world was violent during Noah’s day, and people’s thoughts were continuously evil (Genesis 6:5,11). But Noah found favour in the Lord’s sight (vs.8). Noah was completely devoted to God and built the ark as instructed. He and his family were spared by the Lord through His mercy.
Through the life, death, and resurrection of God’s Son, Jesus, we have also been shown the grace of God. We have every reason to honour Him and obey Him in every aspect of our existence. We are never truly alone because He is always near and even dwells within us.
Standing amongst others is simple; standing alone requires courage.
