MATTHEW 20:1-16
One night, a chaplain to the elderly paid a visit to a nursing home. A resident named John crept out of his room quietly, trying to start a conversation with him. “Will God be disappointed if I become a Christian this late in life?” he inquired after they had chatted for a while. John’s inquiry was not unexpected. As a chaplain, he has heard it from the elderly, individuals struggling with addictions, and former inmates in various forms. They believe they have cause to think that it is too late for them to know God or be used by Him.
He spent time with John looking at persons in the Bible who may have thought it was too late to know God because of their past. Despite their backgrounds, Rahab, a prostitute (Josh. 2:12-14; Heb. 11:31), and Zacchaeus, a tax collector (Luke 19:1-8), chose faith in God.
They also considered Jesus’ parable of the vineyard workers (Matt. 20:1-16). The earlier they were hired, the more labour they could provide the vineyard owner, but those hired later realised they were valued equally by the owner and would be compensated equally. The owner of the vineyard chose to be gracious to all of them.
God longs to show us His grace and invite us into relationship with Him, regardless of our past or present circumstances.
🙏🏼Thank You, Lord, that we can come to You for forgiveness and restoration of our relationship with You at any moment. Thank You for allowing us to now be used by You to make a difference in the lives of others.
