PROVERBS 22:6
We are asked to train up our children in the way they should go and not hold on to them and never let them go.
The journey of parenting is an ongoing lesson of letting go. We naturally want to protect and direct our children away from pain, danger, or discomfort. When they are grown, these instincts do not subside, but as we see our children gain strength, wisdom, and courage, it becomes increasingly clear that we must continually release them. It is a little easier with the assurance that God never lets them go.
When we try to hold on to our children for longer than necessary, they may become rebellious as they begin to long for freedom. And the earlier we train them up in the way of the Lord, the more confident we will be to release them, trusting Him to care for them.
And for those blessed enough to still have parents, perhaps you need to extend an extra measure of grace when they hold a little too tightly. It is only a sign of their love, fears and cares.
