2 CORINTHIANS 6:16.
During the reign of King David, the tabernacle (the movable tent) made by Moses represented the presence of God among the people. It was at the high place at Gibeon. It was not an immediate and convenient altar.
When David sinned and needed to sacrifice to God, he was told to build on Ornan’s threshing floor. In 1 Chronicles 21:26, David built an altar to God, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings, and called on Him; and He answered him from heaven by fire on the altar of burnt offering.
Going before the altar is still necessary today, but through the Lord Jesus it has been made even more convenient. We may not always be able to run to the House of God (the Church), but we can have a closer altar.
1 Corinthians 6:19 says our bodies are the temple of the Holy Spirit. It is our responsibility to build an altar to the Lord in our hearts, maintain and visit it frequently. We can take our sin, sorrow, faults, and failings to God at this altar, letting His fire consume them and reprove us. We can take our joys and thanksgiving to Him too. As we maintain this consciousness we are drawn closer to God and His physical temple.
I hope the altars are prepared now?
“Come and make my heart Your home
Come and be everything I am and all I know
Search me through and through
until my heart becomes a home for You.”
