HAPPY DEPENDENCE DAY!

MATTHEW 6:6–13

One weekend the children decided to make breakfast for themselves, causing a chaotic scene. Tired from a long week, Daddy and Mummy slept until 7:00 a.m., when they heard a loud crash and found a shattered bowl of oatmeal on the floor. The children chose independence, not seeking help, and the outcome was clearly not delicious.

Humans are designed to shift from being dependent to being independent. However, maturing in our relationship with God entails becoming more reliant on Him rather than independent. We practice these kinds of dependency when we pray. Jesus was teaching a prayer of dependency when He taught His disciples—and all of us who have come to believe in Him—to pray, “Give us this day our daily bread” (Matthew 6:11). Bread is a symbol for direction, deliverance, and sustenance. For all of that and more, we are reliant on God.

In Jesus, there are no self-made believers, and we will never be free from His grace. May we constantly start our days in a dependent manner, calling out to “our Father in heaven” in prayer.

🙏Dear Father, You are our Creator and our Sustainer. Please help us to depend on You as You continue to lead us; in Jesus’ name, we pray.
