COMFORT FROM A FRIEND

JOB 2:7–13

A mom found her daughter muddy after school. She said her friend had slipped and fallen into a mud puddle, hurting her leg. Feeling sorry for her friend, the daughter sat in the puddle with her friend until a teacher arrived.

Job, devastated by the loss of his children and suffering from painful sores, received comfort from three friends. They sat on the ground with him for seven days and nights, but no one spoke to him due to their understanding of his immense suffering (Job 2:12-13).

At first, Job’s friends were remarkably understanding. They felt that Job just needed someone to sit with him while he grieved. In the upcoming chapters, the three men will start talking. Ironically, these friends end up offering Job bad counsel when they finally begin to talk (16:1–4).

Sitting with a friend who is in pain is often the best thing that we can do to help them.

🙏 Heavenly Father, help us to be good friends to those who are hurting.
