OUR BEST FRIEND

MATTHEW 27:26; HEBREWS 10:19–23

Even though I was twelve years old, because I was small in size, nobody would allow me to drink first from the fountain. One day, my friend Joseph helped clear the way, allowing me to get a drink first and preventing others from pushing me aside.

Jesus was aware of what it was like to deal with the worst cruelty from people. He was mocked and denied by mankind (Isaiah 53:3). But He became our champion in addition to becoming a victim. He made it possible for us to have a connection with God by surrendering His life (Hebrews 10:20). When we turn from our sins and put our faith in Him, He offers us the free gift of salvation—something we could never accomplish for ourselves.

The greatest friend we could ever have is Jesus. Just because of us, He pushed through the crowd to reach the front (the cross) so we could have a drink and even take a bath for our cleansing at the fountain of life. He has extended His arms to us through the cross, although others may reject us or hold us at arm’s length. What power our Saviour has!

🎶There is a fountain filled with blood

  Drawn from Immanuel’s veins;

And sinners, plunged beneath that flood,

  Lose all their guilty stains:

  Lose all their guilty stains,

  Lose all their guilty stains;

And sinners, plunged beneath that flood,

  Lose all their guilty stains.

William Cowper (1772)
