OUR TWELFTH MAN

HEBREWS 11:32–12:3

The words “HOME OF THE 12TH MAN” are displayed prominently at the Texas A&M football stadium. Although each team is only permitted to field eleven players, thousands of A&M students stand the whole game to support their side, a phenomenon known as the “12th Man.” The origins of the custom may be traced back to 1922, when the coach summoned a student from the stands to suit up and prepare to substitute for an injured player. His eager presence on the sidelines boosted the team a lot, even though he never played a minute of the game.

Hebrews 11 highlights the role of faith heroes who endured great trials and remained loyal to God. Chapter 12 encourages us to overcome obstacles and sin and to run with perseverance in the marked race. The great saints and ordinary people who have been faithful to the Lord serve as the spiritual 12th Man, guiding us through our journey and providing encouragement through their example and presence in heaven.

We are inspired by all who followed Jesus as we focus on Him, who is the pioneer and perfecter of our faith.

May we receive strength to run our race of faith today and in the days ahead.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!
