LUKE 6:27–36
On the final day of the US Civil War, Union army officer Joshua Chamberlain ordered his soldiers to salute their Confederate foe without taunting or using vicious words. This brilliant act of bravery demonstrated the importance of maintaining peace and honouring one’s enemy, as one wrong word or belligerent act could lead to slaughter.
In Luke 6, Jesus emphasises the importance of forgiveness and love for enemies. Those who know His forgiveness are expected to be merciful, just as their Father is merciful. This means we need to forgive and love our enemies, as others may think impossible.
If we were to adopt this idea, just think of the effects it would have on our families and places of work.
By the grace of Christ, may this be the last day that our adversaries and we engage in animosity and conflict.
