HIDDEN LIONS

NUMBERS 14:1–9

During childhood, my father would scare us by hiding in the bush and growling like a lion. Despite living in a rural area, it was unlikely a lion was nearby. My brother and I would laugh and seek out the noise source, excited for playtime with Dad.

One day, a young friend dropped by. We could hear the recognisable growl as we were playing. Our friend shouted and fled. Together, we took off running without remembering it was our dad. My brother and I learned not to be affected by other people’s scared reactions when my dad expressed his sadness over our fear.

Moses commissioned twelve scouts to spy on Israel’s journey to the Promised Land. However, only Caleb and Joshua, knowing their Father’s history, trusted Him to bring them success. Others focused on the obstacles and discouraged the entire nation.

Some “lions” are actually threats. There are also apparitions. Nevertheless, as Jesus’ disciples, we put our trust in the One whose actions and words we are familiar with and trust.

🙏 Lord, we have a lot to fear right now. Help us recognise the difference between genuine danger and fabricated threats, and aid us in putting our trust in You. May we live in trust rather than in fear.
