1 CORINTHIANS 9:24-27
Paul’s letter to the Corinthian church reminds the Corinthians of God’s redemptive plan in unexpected ways, using metaphors to emphasise everyday wisdom. Through two different metaphors (a runner and a boxer), Paul reminds the Corinthians that doing anything—especially following Christ—without a goal in mind is the height of foolishness.
The apostle Paul describes a runner running in a race in 1 Corinthians. The challenges of love and self-sacrifice are comparable to an endurance race in a church where everyone is concerned about their rights. They must give up their rights in submission to Jesus as His followers.
As athletes train their bodies and minds for victory, we must train our souls to flourish. By asking the Holy Spirit to transform us, we leave our old selves behind and stop uttering cruel words. Empowered by God, we do not have to speak the last word when there is disagreement.
🙏 Lord Jesus, help us train to earn the prize that endures forever rather than demanding our rights.
