EXODUS 20:1-7
I was talking to a friend about misusing God’s name one afternoon. We might believe that this only applies to invoking God’s name in a casual or disrespectful manner or by adding it to a swear word. But my friend never missed a chance to share with me the meaning of true faith. He pushed me to consider further ways in which we misuse the name of God.
If all I am doing is looking for God’s approval for my own goals, then I am misusing His name when I declare, “God told me to go this way,” and I ignore the advise of others.
I am dishonouring God’s name when I use Scripture out of context to try to prove a point I wish to be true.
I misuse His name when I erroneously teach from, misquote, or talk from the Bible.
John Piper, an author, presents the following analysis of what it means to use God’s name in vain: According to Piper, we misuse the name of God when we “speak of God in a way that empties Him of His significance.”
My friend urged me to respect God’s name and focus more on using His Word correctly and carefully. Anything less is a dishonour to Him.
🙏🏻 Heavenly Father, help us to glorify Your name and to honour You always in what we say and do.
