WE HAVE FRUIT!

JOSHUA 24:2,8-14

As she put together lunch for her 3-year-old daughter, a young mother sighed. She said aloud, “If we just had a basket of fruit, I would feel rich!” when she noticed the empty fruit basket on the table in their small kitchen. Her young daughter heard her.

Weeks went by. God provided for the family. The struggling mother was still concerned. Then one day, her young daughter ran into the kitchen. She pointed to the full fruit basket on the table and shouted, “Look, Mummy, we are rich!” With the exception of the family buying a bag of apples, nothing had changed.

Joshua, the Israelites’ leader, conveyed a message from God just before he passed away, outlining everything He had accomplished for them. He also noted that God gave them a land on which they did not labour, and cities which they did not build, and they dwell there, and they eat of the olive and vineyard groves which they did not plant (v. 13).

That family, like the Israelites, has since moved and enjoys fruit trees in a large yard that were planted by the previous owner years ago after a period of hardship and scarcity. They have a bowl of fruit in their kitchen if you decide to visit them. It serves as a reminder of God’s benevolence and the impact a 3-year-old’s faith had on her family.

God’s provision for yesterday provides hope and strength for today.
