PROVERBS 26:1-12

Several online news websites have a “Comments” area at the bottom where readers can share their thoughts. There is no shortage of harsh rants, ignorant comments, and name-calling on even the most renowned websites.

Despite being written over 3,000 years ago, the wisdom contained in the book of Proverbs is as current as today’s breaking news.  Two proverbs in chapter 26 appear to be in conflict at first glance, but they are ideal for social media.  “Answer not a fool according to his folly, lest thou also be like unto him.”  (v. 4).  “Answer a fool according to his folly, lest he be wise in his own conceit.”  (v. 5).

The “according to” is where those statements are balanced: Do not respond in a way that a fool would.  But react in a way that wisdom is not regarded as folly.

The issue I have is that I frequently engage in folly.  I have occasionally posted a caustic remark or used someone else’s words against them.  Even when they are also doing foolishly, God hates it when I treat my fellow humans with such contempt.

God grants us a dazzling array of liberties.  We have the freedom to decide what we will say, when we will say it, and how.  Additionally, we are always free to request His advice.

🙏 Lord Jesus, give us the right words to respond to others.
