ERRORS MADE BEAUTIFUL

LUKE 22:39-51

Jazz musician Herbie Hancock was given the opportunity to join Miles Davis’ already-renowned quintet early in his career. Hancock acknowledged being anxious in an interview but said it was a beautiful experience since Davis was so nurturing. At one concert, Hancock misplayed the chord as Davis was getting close to the peak of his solo. Davis carried on despite the fact that he was mortified. Hancock remarked, “He played some notes that made my chord right.”

What a lovely example of leadership! Hancock was not reprimanded or made to appear silly by Davis. He did not bother to apologize for the performance’s failure. He just changed his plan, turning a potentially disastrous error into something lovely.

What Davis did for Hancock, Jesus did for Peter. Jesus reattached the ear that Peter had cut from a member of the crowd who had come to arrest Him (Luke 22:51), demonstrating that His kingdom was about healing, not hurting. Jesus demonstrated a better approach by using Peter’s error to show a better way.

What Jesus accomplished for Peter, He also does for us. And what He does for us, we can do for others. We can transform their mistakes into lovely acts of forgiveness, healing, and redemption rather than magnifying every error.

🙏Lord Jesus, You are aware of our tendency to act selfishly and foolishly. Please pardon us and heal us. For the love of Your name, please make even the worst parts of our lives work to Your glory.
