DEUTERONOMY 10:12
Some of my secondary school teachers stand out in my memory. Some of them were loved by many of us (the students), but only because we were free to behave as we pleased. And because they rarely punish us, we never needed to pay attention to them. Others were quite frightful. They knew how to maintain order, enforce discipline, and get us to pay attention to our tasks. However, I believe that at the end of the day, we preferred our strict teachers. They we tough on us, but received wonderful results from us.
God desires for us to love and fear Him. Our obligation to do both is made clear in the Bible text for today.
Giving the Lord God the utmost respect is what it means to “fear” Him. It is about honouring the power and dominion that He has over everything. When we pay attention to Him, follow His instructions, and put our full faith in Him, we demonstrate our fear of Him.
But rather than out of necessity, we express our fear out of “love.” We love who He is and what He has done for us in Jesus, therefore we live for Him!
So, let us love and fear God, and we will obey what He commands.
