KEEP THE UNITY

EPHESIANS 4:1-6

I read the story of a man who was trapped on an island and subsequently found. He was questioned by his rescuers regarding the three huts they had seen. “This one is my home, and that one is my church,” he said, pointing to each building. “The third hut,” he continued, “Was my former church.”

The absurdity of this story may make us laugh, but it also raises questions about the unity of believers.

Rich and poor, Jews and Gentiles, men and women, masters and slaves, all were present in the Ephesian church at the time of the apostle Paul. Friction also occurs where there are variances. The question of unity was one of Paul’s concerns. However, note what Paul says in Ephesians 4:3 about this subject. He did not advise them to be committed to produce or to put together a united front. He advised them to make an effort to maintain the spiritual ties of unity. There is already unity among Christians since they share one body, one spirit, one hope, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, and an one God and Father of all (verses 4-6).

How can we preserve this unity? By being humble, kind, and patient as we express our different opinions and convictions (verse 2). The ability to respond to those we disagree with in love will be given to us by the Spirit.

Our relationship with Christ is the source of our unity as Christians.

🙏🏼Dear Lord, make the unity of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit visible in the way we live and serve. Fill us with the fruit of the Spirit to be able to love others as You do.
