MY BROTHER’S KEEPER

GENESIS 4:9

The sea is vast and deep. It holds so many secrets for us to be able to fathom completely. Among the many giants of the sea, the whale is one that dominates the world under water. Something as huge as a whale definitely sounds scary.

Marine biologist Nan Hauser was on one of her expeditions with her team, when a shark confronted them on their trip. Within seconds, a whale pushed her to safety using its head and mouth to the other side, gently lifting the scientist out of the water entirely. She thought her life was over, but later realised the whale was protecting her.

In a world of danger, we are called to watch out for others. But we might ask ourselves, “Should we really be responsible for others?” Or in Cain’s words: “Am I my brother’s keeper?” (Genesis 4:9). The rest of the Old and New Testaments resounds with the thunderous response: Yes!

Adam was to care for the garden. Cain was to care for Abel. Israel was to keep watch over the vulnerable and care for the needy. Existing on earth is all about caring.

God continued to watch over Cain, even after he killed his brother and was sent away (Genesis 4:15–16). God did for Cain what Cain should have done, but failed to do for Abel.

Today, Jesus keeps us in His care, and He empowers us to go and do likewise for others.

Thank You Lord for caring for us. You keep us and watch over us. Help us to do the same for others.
