A SPARK

JAMES 3:3-6

The 2018 Woolsey Fire in California spread more quickly than anyone anticipated. About 97,000 acres of land were consumed, more than 1,600 structures destroyed, and three people were killed by the fire. The fire was sparked by utility equipment in fierce winds. It was one of the most destructive fire outbreaks in recent times.

There is something small that every human being possesses – a tongue. While James chapter 3 is first directed specifically to teachers (vs.1), the application quickly spreads to each of us. The tongue, small as it is, can lead to disastrous results. It can create small sparks that ends up in great fires.

Our small tongues are powerful, but our big God is more powerful. His help on a daily basis provides the strength to restrain and control them.

“Set a watch, O LORD, before my mouth; keep the door of my lips.” (Psalm 141:3)
