THE POWER OF SILENCE

1 KINGS 19:11-13

The world is a noisy place. Or do I say a very noisy place? Even our worship of God has become as noisy as silence is mistaken most times for lack of zeal. In between the noisy moments and activities of this life, it helps to remember that the still, quiet voice of God is best heard in solitude.

After successfully winning the contest against the false prophets of Baal, and turning Israel back to God, Elijah’s life was threatened by wicked Queen Jezebel. He ran to the wilderness of Beersheba in Judah, asking God to take his life. But God had better plans for Elijah, and so He came to talk with him.

Elijah probably expected this Great God who answered him by fire to come in the violent wind or the rowdy earthquake, although He certainly has the power to use such mediums when delivering a message. But He chose to speak with him in a still small voice.

In those times when we are most frightened, worried, or troubled, it is good to seek a silent wilderness where His voice can come and be recognized.

Silence is still of much value in our noisy world.
