MARK 6:14-29
As i mark another day of my birth today, i woke up to remember John (my namesake) who was murdered at a birthday party.
While Jesus was carrying out His ministry, the one who introduced Him had no such liberty. John the Baptist was in prison.
He had openly declared that it was wrong for King Herod Antipas to take Herodias, the wife of his half brother Philip, as his own. In response to John’s reproof, Herod had John thrown into prison, perhaps at the urging of Herodias.
Herod was at a loss as to what to do with John, because the people ‘take him for a prophet.’ (Matthew 14:5) Herodias, though, felt no such indecision. She wanted him dead. Finally, the opportunity came.
Herod arranged a large celebration for his birthday. Salome, the young daughter of Herodias by her former husband Philip, was sent in to dance for the guests. The men are enthralled by her performance.
Herod expressed pleasure with Salome’s dancing and vowed to give her whatever she asked for. Before answering, Salome confided with her mother.
This was the opportunity that Herodias had been seeking! “The head of John the Baptist,” she promptly answered. Immediately, Salome came back to Herod with her request: “I want you to give me right away on a platter the head of John the Baptist.”
This greatly distressed Herod, but his guests had heard his oath to Salome. He had to grant it, even if this meant murdering an innocent man. Hence, Herod sent a bodyguard to the prison with the grisly instructions. Soon the bodyguard returned with John’s head on a platter. He gave it to Salome, who took it to her mother.
Much can be learnt from this story. But for today, remember never to be hasty to make promises – think well before you speak. Do not let your words become your trap!
