EPHESIANS 2:19–3:11
According to Henri Nouwen, a “community” is the place where the person you least want to live with always lives. We frequently develop clubs or cliques rather than communities when we surround ourselves with the people we would most like to live with. A club may be formed by anybody; a community requires maturity, a common goal, and perseverance.
The Christian church united diverse groups, including Jews, Gentiles, men, women, slaves, and free, on equal terms. Apostle Paul emphasized the importance of this diversity in capturing the attention of the world and the supernatural (Ephesians 3:9–10).
In some ways, the church has sadly failed in this role. Despite her shortcomings, she serves as a gathering place for generations, including infants, children, responsible adults, and those who may drift asleep if preaching is too long.
It makes sense for us to look for a congregation of individuals who are “not like us” if we want the sense of community that God is offering.
🙏Lord, remind us that the church is your work, and you have brought us together as a community.
