Perhaps you have seen the video of the young child finding out he has a new sister. He laments, “It is always girls, girls, girls, girls!” in the midst of his meltdown.
Although the story provides a humorous peek into human expectations, disappointment is not amusing. It is all around us. One particular Bible story seems to be particularly soaked in disappointment. For the chance to wed Rachel, Jacob agreed to work for seven years. Jacob had a wedding night surprise nonetheless, after finishing his contract. He found her sister Leah in the morning instead of Rachel.
Leah must have been disappointed, but we tend to focus on Jacob. She was forced to get married, and all of her ambitions and dreams started to die that day because she was made to wed a man who did not want or love her.
Are those who fear God never let down? No! A man might expect to be disappointed.
Leah was eventually honoured by Jacob and interred in the family graveyard beside Abraham, Sarah, Isaac, and Rebekah (Genesis 49:31). And God gave the world our Saviour through the ancestry of Leah, who in life believed she was unwanted. Jesus offers justice, renews hope, and bestows upon us a legacy that goes beyond all of our wildest expectations.
