FOSTERING UNITY

PROVERBS 6:16,19

Proverbs 6:16–19 contains strong words. Sowing discord among brethren is listed as one of the seven things the Lord detests. This act undermines the unity that Christ wishes for His followers.

Those who sow discord may not have intended to do so originally. Instead, they might be focused on their own wants or the interests of the group they are a part of. Consider the arguments between Lot’s and Abraham’s herdsmen (Genesis 13:1–18) and the disputes between Christ’s disciples over who should have precedence (Luke 9:46).

So what is the best way of fostering unity? The heart’s transformation comes first. When we take on Christ’s mind, we cultivate a servant’s heart and a spirit of humility. We can only have the ability to watch out not only for our own interests, but also for the interests of others through Christ. We quickly start to value other people’s wants and hopes over our own.

We observe that conflict is being replaced with joy and harmony as our relationships of love deepen.

🙏🏼 Lord, help us to know that we can accomplish more together than we can alone.
