DEUTERONOMY 8:7-18
I disagree with people who decry material possessions and argue that owning things is necessarily bad. And I have to admit that I am a consumer who is frequently tempted to add to my treasure trove the things I believe I require.
However, I am aware that having a lot of material has the potential to lead to spiritual loss. The more we have and feel like we have everything we need, the more we are prone to forgetting our need for God and even our desire for Him. However, everything we have ultimately comes from God, who lavishly provides us with all things to enjoy (1 Tim. 6:17).
Regrettably, our enjoyment of God’s blessings may lead us to worship the gift rather than the Giver. That was why, as God prepared to give His people a life full of bounty in the Promised Land of good and plenty, He cautioned them not to forget about Him (Deut. 8:11).
If God has blessed us with temporal prosperity, we must remember where it came from. In truth, whether we are wealthy in this world’s commodities or not, we all have something to be grateful for. Let us remember the Lord’s warning and praise Him for His abundant generosity.
🙏🏼 Lord help us seek You more than the blessings You give.
