A SKETCH

1 CORINTHIANS 13:8-12

In the 1941 publication, “The Weight of Glory and Other Addresses” by C.S. Lewis, he tells the story of a woman who gave birth to a son while imprisoned in a dungeon. Since he had never seen the world outside the prison, his mother tried to describe it with pencil drawings. When he and his mother were finally set free, the simple pencil sketches were replaced with real pictures of our beautiful world.

Likewise, the Bible-inspired image of heaven will one day be replaced with a direct and joyful experience. Paul understood that our perception of heaven is narrow until the future day when we are in the presence of Christ (1 Corinthians 13:12). His trust in the glory to come gave him strength amid life’s challenges.

Our current perception of the glory of heaven is only a sketch, but we can be perfectly sure of Jesus’ claim that He has gone to prepare a place for us (John 14:13). The best is yet to come!

Now we see Jesus in the Scripture, but someday we will see Him one-on-one.

🙏”We love to sing below
for mercies freely given;
but O we long to know
the triumph-song of heaven.”
– William Bullock (1854)
