MARK 10:28-30
The common belief among the Jews was that material possessions were a reward from God for one’s obedience to the law. In Mark 10:17-22, a rich man claimed he had faithfully kept the law since his youth, so he assumed he deserved eternal life. When challenged to give up his wealth to follow Jesus, he would not because he loved his possessions more. In contrast, the disciples had left their families and professions to follow Christ.
Judson W. Van DeVenter (1855–1939) was an American art teacher and musician, who left his profession to become a music minister and evangelist. He wrote the hymn “I Surrender All,” which has inspired many and led thousands to Christ over time.
We may or may not be led to leave our professions or possessions, but no matter where God has placed us, we are called to daily surrender our lives and time to Christ, obeying His gentle call to follow Him and serve Him with our talents and resources. As we do, He will use us to His glory.
Lord Jesus, help us to surrender our all to You today.
