JOHN 15:5
The phrase “Heaven (or God) helps those who help themselves” is one that emphasizes the importance of self-initiative and agency. It originated in ancient Greece as “the gods help those who help themselves” and may originally have been proverbial. The phrase is often mistaken as a scriptural quote, though it is not stated verbatim in the Bible. It however is contrary to the Bible’s message of God’s grace – God helps us because we are helpless, and we are saved by faith and not our works or efforts.
We are encouraged not to be lazy, but we cannot save ourselves, neither can we depend on ourselves. God’s power can accomplish what our human efforts cannot get close to.
Let us cast our cares on Him today.
Lord, teach us dependence on You. Our world teaches we can count on ourselves, but help us not to be fooled by it. As we experience trials, may we see You as our true source of strength and salvation, in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
