MASSIVE RESISTANCE

ACTS 10:34

Massive resistance was a strategy declared by U.S. Senator Harry F. Byrd Sr. of Virginia. Many schools, and even an entire school system, were shut down in 1958 and 1959 in attempts to block integration – the act of having African-American (black) students attend schools previously attended by only Caucasian (white) students.

Today, some members of our society and members of the Church still deny the truth that every human being, regardless of race or heritage, should be accepted and loved. Some members of the early church struggled with this same truth, believing that certain people were, by birth, loved by God while others were rejected. After receiving a divine vision, however, Peter stunned everyone who would listen with this amazing revelation: “Of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons. But in every nation He that feareth Him, and worketh righteousness, is accepted with Him.” (Acts 10:34–35)

As we consider our Church, neighborhood, family, and our social sphere – where, how and why are we still tempted to exclude others? Do we still carry on with the ideology of the ‘massive resistance’?

Remember, God opens His arms wide to extend love to everyone. May we do the same in His power.
