Babies often search the faces of older people who carry them for a smile or affection, as faces reveal our feelings towards others, serving as our “tell.”

Psalm 80’s author, Asaph, expressed his distress and desire to behold the face of the Lord. He observed Judah’s sister kingdom, Israel, collapsing beneath the weight of the Assyrian Empire. Judah was exposed to invasion by Egypt on the south, Assyria on the north, and the Arab countries on the east. Both in number and ability, she was outmatched.

Gathering his anxieties, Asaph prayed that God’s face would shine on them three times (80:3, 7, 19). (Or put another way, please show Your smile to me.)Β

It is beneficial to look past our worries and seek the face of our heavenly Father. Looking at the cross is the best way to view God’s face (John 3:16).

So be aware of this: Your Father smiles broadly at you. You are safe!
