IF ONLY…

JOHN 11:21–35

My friend slowed the car as we were pulling out of the parking lot so he could wait for a young woman on a bike. She waved, grinned, and rode on when he nodded, letting her go first. Shortly after, the teenage biker was knocked down on the pavement by the driver of a parked SUV, who threw open his door. She sobbed as she looked at her twisted bike, her legs gushing blood.

Later, we reflected on the accident: if only we had made her wait or if the driver had looked before opening the door.

When unanticipated difficulties arise, we occasionally doubt God’s goodness. We might even feel the same kind of hopelessness that Mary and Martha felt after their brother passed away. If only Jesus had arrived when He first learned of Lazarus’s illness! (John 11:21–32).

We may not always comprehend the reasons behind our challenges, but we can trust in the wisdom of our loving God, who is working towards a greater good.

It is nothing to trust God in the sunshine; confidence is demonstrated by trusting Him in the darkness.

🙏 Lord, help us to trust your heart of love even when we do not understand what you are doing in our lives.
